A Simple Act of Hospitality
Some journeys begin with careful planning. Ours began with a simple act of genuine care. In 1994, our founder was working at a small guest house in Lazimpat, Kathmandu. He believed every guest deserved his full attention, a philosophy that caught the eye of a Japanese traveler named Tamagawa-san.
Noticing his sincerity and strong work ethic, Tamagawa-san offered him a life-changing opportunity: to visit Japan and experience its rich cuisine and culture firsthand.
The Craft of the Market
In Japan, our founder spent three memorable months under the mentorship of Tamagawa-san. From early mornings in bustling fish markets to learning the delicate art of handmade tofu, he observed the precision and discipline required for true Japanese gastronomy.
He discovered the deep-rooted philosophy of Omotenashi respect for ingredients, patience in preparation, and pride in every dish served. This cultural exchange flourished as he shared Nepali dishes with his hosts, building bridges through food.
Turning Dreams into Reality
Returning to Nepal with a vision, fate introduced another mentor Hareyama-san, a respected sensei who recognized the founder's passion. Hareyama-san provided the final push and guidance needed to turn a dream into the reality of Momotarou.
On October 10, 1999, Momotarou opened its humble doors in Thamel. Named after the legendary Japanese folk hero who brings people together, we have spent the last 25 years celebrating the joy of food, culture, and friendship.
